Johns Hopkins Neuroscience Scholars Program (JHNSP)

Description

The Neuroscience Scholars Program focuses on providing mentorship along with a high quality research experience for undergraduates from underrepresented (URM) and/or deaf or hard-of-hearing (D/HH) backgrounds that are interested in pursuing PhD or MD/PhD programs in the neurosciences. This program encompasses a multi-year experience with participants often coming back to continue their research in subsequent summers. JHNSP will help students navigate two critical transition periods: from high school to college, and from college to graduate school. Participants also enjoy yearlong contact with our community of mentors and colleagues. 

Eligibility

Applicants should be:

  • US Citizen or US Resident
  • Rising college freshman or sophomore; accepted into an accredited college program in neuroscience
  • Interested in pursuing PhD or MD/PhD in neurosciences field
  • Demonstrate strong dedication and alignment to program values
  • Committed to conducting 10-weeks of research for three summers
  • Students are selected for the program after a series of steps that include application screening, interviews, and invitation to participate based on the availability of suitable mentors. All interns will undergo a health screening, criminal background check, and training in the protection of human subjects and the responsible conduct of research prior to beginning their internship and/or research projects. Housing will be provided by the program (dorm room or apartment style) and parking at the apartment will also be covered. This program is viewed as an educational-career enrichment experience however, scholars do receive a stipend currently $15/hr.
  • Scholars are reimbursed for one round-trip travel expenses from home of residence and Baltimore. Scholars are responsible for their meals. Scholars are required to attend all professional development training sessions and group meetings. Unexplained absences may result in dismissal from the program.
  • The deadline for applying, which includes transcripts, letters of recommendations, and application material, is TBD. Please request three letters of recommendations (at least two from a science/math teacher), and have the recommenders directly email it to Heather Thomas at hthoma21@jh.edu. Applicants will be contacted for interviews in mid-February 2024. Final decisions will be released by mid-March 2024. The summer program internship will take place over 10 weeks from June 2024 – August 2024 and will be conducted in person in Baltimore City, MD.
