Joint Science Education Project (JSEP)

Description

The Joint Science Education Project (JSEP) is an international collaboration between Greenland, the United States, and Denmark to educate and inspire the next generation of polar and STEM professionals. Since its initiation during the International Polar Year in 2007, high school and university students and teachers from the three countries work together to study polar environments and the human dimensions of rapid Arctic change. Students practice scientific and engineering methods in a cross cultural classroom with mentoring from international teachers and scientists. Funding for JSEP is provided by Naalakkersuisut  (the Government of Greenland) and the U.S. National Science Foundation through a grant to Dartmouth College.

Eligibility

  • Remote program: We accept applications from high school students who are U.S. citizens and in their junior year (11th grade) at time of application, for participation during the summer between their junior and senior year. There are no exceptions to this requirement.
  • Field program: For the summer 2024 field program**, we accept applications from students who meet all three of the following criteria: students who are 1) U.S. citizens, 2) completed a remote JSEP program in 2022 or 2023, and 3) will be 18 (but not 19+) on June 1, 2024. Due to new policies, this eligibility change is required and there are no exceptions to this requirement.
  • **We will revisit our eligibility criteria to best meet program needs, but participation in future field programs may very likely require successful completion of the remote program. We encourage any student interested in future field expeditions to apply for the remote program the year they are eligible.
