The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), offers a hands-on, in-person research opportunity. The NSF created the REU program to enhance the academic and professional opportunities for undergraduates pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This initiative allows students to engage in a wide range of projects, expanding their exposure to advanced research activities.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has been awarded a renewed NSF grant (#2244167), enabling the institution to continue offering high-impact student research opportunities in cutting-edge topics under the guidance of UTRGV physics faculty. A significant update to this grant includes the integration of Fine Arts undergraduates into the REU program, transitioning from a solely STEM focus to a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initiative. This inclusion fosters an interdisciplinary environment, benefiting underrepresented students at this Hispanic Serving Institution. By involving Fine Arts majors, the program not only broadens the research experience for these students but also promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and professional development.
The REU program supports a diverse cohort of 12 students, comprising equal numbers of local UTRGV students and national participants. This structure facilitates cultural exchange and community engagement, with local students introducing their peers to the Rio Grande Valley. The program features daily lunch meetings, scheduled field trips, and lectures by visiting scholars or program mentors, enhancing the educational experience.
Spanning 10 weeks, the REU emphasizes both scientific and artistic presentations, with students preparing poster presentations and, for Art majors, a final piece of artwork. The program encourages local participants to showcase their research at academic conferences and symposiums, aiding in their professional growth and practical skills development.
