SEASCape: Ocean Studies on the Cape

Description

A two-and-a-half-week summer program at Sea Education Association providing current high school students the opportunity to explore coastal and offshore marine environments around Cape Cod, both scientifically and culturally.

Divided into two major themes, “Introduction to Oceanography” and “Oceans and Society,” students participating in SEASCape will not only conduct fieldwork throughout Cape Cod’s diverse environment but will also explore the rich heritage of Cape Code as a as a center for global maritime trade, commercial fisheries, shipbuilding, and naval operations. Through daily weekday lectures and discussions, laboratory activities, field trips, and group projects, students are immersed into a hands-on learning experience strengthening their understanding of marine issues, the value of community, and leadership skills.

Eligibility

  • SEA welcomes applications from current high school students, including graduating seniors, who have successfully completed at least one high school level science and one high school level mathematics course, and have an interest in understanding the ocean and environmental issues from a variety of perspectives.
  • Rising freshmen will be considered for the virtual programs only. We review each application carefully, with an emphasis on student interest, motivation, and goals for the selected program.
  • Each SEA high school program has a limited capacity with a maximum of 20- 25 students. We accept summer applications beginning in the preceding fall and encourage students to apply early since some programs may fill before the stated deadline.
