This National Science Foundation-Research Experiences for Undergraduate (NSF-REU) sponsored program in the Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University (Orange, CA) will annually provide 10-15 students selected exclusively from partnering 2-year community colleges with the opportunity to engage in faculty-mentored research projects related to earth and environmental issues from the regional to global scale.
The SURFEES program objectives are to:
Provide transformative research experiences to students from 2-year institutions that lack substantial research facilities
Increase the participation of underrepresented students, particularly Hispanics, women and low-income individuals, in hands-on scientific research and increase their confidence level in conducting research
Develop scientifically-literate, experienced participants who persist, transfer into and graduate with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degrees
Increase student awareness of earth and environmental issues and career opportunities in environmental area
Specific features of the SURFEES program include:
Faculty-mentored intensive research in a range of earth and environmental disciplines including biology, chemistry, food science, and geoscience
On-campus student apartment housing for full 8 weeks of the program
Professional development workshops
Seminars with faculty speakers and environmental professionals
Cohort-building activities and social events
Concluding research poster presentation showcase and ceremony
$4800 fellowship award
