Background
Captain Jesse Ozbat was a 2002 Graduate of Prince George High School and a 2006 graduate of Virginia State University. He received his commission on May 13, 2006 and served with the 1st and 14th Infantry, 2nd Stryker Brigade in Iraq and with the 214th Fires Brigade at Fort Sill and assigned to the 168 Brigade Support Battalion in Afghanistan.
On May 20, 2012, Captain Ozbat was killed in action in Afghanistan. He was known for his courage, dedication and leadership; he is the perfect role model for students to aspire to be like. Others who knew Captain Ozbat have said:
“He had a leadership quality that made everyone look up to him.” “I met Jesse in JROTC at Prince George High School. Even then we saw Jesse's commitment to the troops, his Esprit de Corps was unparalleled, and he had a presence of leadership which I could only equate to that of a big brother.” “Time and time again, he would work himself either to a stupor at his desk, or fall asleep at it due to the hours he put in.” The Prince George Community, family and friends, with love in their hearts, gave selflessly of their time and money to work tirelessly together to create this scholarship as a lasting memorial to honor Captain Jesse Ozbat - “an American hero” who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
Family and friends are very interested in receiving applications from candidates who truly understand the sacrifice that was made, and more importantly the respect and honor this sacrifice deserves. This scholarship is not about the money, it is about one soldier’s love for his country, service above self and the sacrifices he made so others can live the American dream. It is “Honor Above All”.
Knowing the kind of man Captain Jesse Ozbat was, his love of country and for his family, this scholarship is a fitting memorial to assist other special young people like him to reach their educational goals.
