Purpose

To promote continuing education at institutions of higher learning for individuals interested in pursuing a course of study in the medical field, healthcare administration or receiving appropriate training as a full-time or part-time firefighter, or emergency services provider. Priority will be given to a student who volunteers with the Disputanta Volunteer Fire Department or any Prince George County Emergency Services Department, or who is a dependent of a current or former volunteer of the Disputanta Volunteer Fire Department or any Prince George County Emergency Services Department who meets the basic requirements as outlined in the scholarship guidelines.

Background

The Disputanta Volunteer Fire Department Joshua A. Culler Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in 2012 in memory and in honor of Joshua A. Culler. Josh was born and bred in Prince George County and at the young age of 15 Josh joined the Disputanta Volunteer Fire Department where he remained for 20 years. Unfortunately, Josh was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 33 and passed away at age 35 of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Josh was passionate that his children get a college education in hopes that they followed in his footsteps with his passion of fighting fire and overall helping people. It was after his death that his wife and the members of Disputanta Volunteer Fire Department established this scholarship to help students of Prince George County that are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field or healthcare administration or receiving appropriate training as a full-time or part-time firefighter, or emergency services provider.

Policy

The scholarship program is available to students residing in Prince George County. Students attending Tidewater Academy, Southampton Academy, Appomattox Regional Governor's School or Maggie Walker Governor's School who reside in Prince George County may also apply. Student interns working for John Randolph Foundation are eligible to apply; however, foundation trustees, other foundation employees and their immediate families (parents, spouses, brothers, sisters, and anyone claimed as a dependent for tax purposes) are not eligible to apply. • Submit a completed “John Randolph Foundation Scholarship Application” ONLINE which includes the ability to UPLOAD the required “attachments” requested on the application;
• In addition to the essay required on the application, please provide a one-page essay answering the question, “Why did I choose this field of study?
• Be a well-rounded individual with extracurricular activities;
• Demonstrate active participation in the community;
• Must have a G.P.A. of 2.5 or better.
