Project GO Scholarship

Description

Project Global Officer (Project GO) is a Department of Defense initiative aimed at improving the language skills, regional expertise, and intercultural communication skills of future military officers. Sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and administered by the Institute of International Education, Project GO provides institutional grants to U.S institutions of higher education with large ROTC student enrollments, to include the Senior Military Colleges. In turn, these institutions provide language and culture training to ROTC students from across the nation, funding domestic and overseas ROTC language programs and scholarships. Working in support of Army, Air Force, and Navy ROTC Headquarters, Project GO facilitates collaborative efforts both among universities and ROTC leadership.Since 2007, Project GO institutions have provided over 8,500 domestic and overseas summer scholarships to ROTC students for critical language study. Project GO has strengthened university infrastructure in the critical languages and created venues for communication amongst ROTC leadership and university personnel.WHO WE AREDefense Language and National Security Education Office - The Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO) leads the nation in recruiting, training, sustaining, and enhancing language and culture capabilities to ensure national security and defense readiness by:- Building a highly-qualified pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international expertise committed to public service through programs and policies,- Leading the Department’s strategic policy planning regarding foreign language, culture, and regional expertise for Department of Defense personnel,- Providing oversight of high-value training and education Department of Defense initiatives, and- Ensuring national and Departmental governance through the Defense Language Steering Committee, the National Security Education Board, and other organizational and professional bodies.The Institute of International Education - The Institute of International Education (IIE) administers Project GO institutional grants on behalf of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office. Eligibility

- A U.S. citizen.- An undergraduate or graduate student on track to commission through the Army, Naval, or Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), contracted or non-contracted, at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States. Marine Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) students are also eligible.Overseas ParticipantsIn order to be eligible to participate in a Project GO overseas program, for the duration of the program successful applicants must:- Remain in ROTC for the duration of the program.- Not be commissioned officers.- Be in an inactive, non-drilling status.- Not be employed by the U.S. federal government or any foreign government.Domestic ParticipantsThe following categories of applicants are eligible for domestic programs only:- Newly commissioned officers awaiting active duty (limited to officers commissioned in May and interested in summer domestic programs).- ROTC students who are drilling members of the National Guard or Reserves.- Army Green to Gold members. Not Eligible for Project GO- Non-U.S. citizens- Active duty military members (not participating in ROTC)- Navy Seaman to Admiral Program members- Officer Candidate School participants- JROTC students- Service academy students- Federal government employeesSelectionScholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of merit.
